Panmen: $2m Not Good Enough

The soca bell has rung in Trinidad and Tobago. For the unitiated, that means full steam ahead to Trinidad Carnival 2011. But Carnival is nothing without bacchanal and this year panmen are first out of the blocks with their objection to a proposed pay cut.

Multiculturalism Minister Winston Peters, also known as the calypsonian Gypsy, has proposed reducing the stipend to pannists who play in the Panorama competition. He is offering $800 instead of the usual $1000, and a $2m Panorama first prize. The Trinidad press is reporting today that this is not good enough for the pan men and women.
